Is there a plugin/script or option for doing exact measurements in maya?

Hi Guys,

So I am modeling some environments and I am having a terrible time with Maya. Is there a way to see your extrusions, etc in real world units. Like for example I need to extrude a wall 75cm from the ground but the extrude tool doesn't give me any info like how it is in 3dmax or Modo. How do you guys go about this when you have to model for measurements?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm assuming your working unit preferences are also set to centimetres? If that's the case then the numbers given to you by the extrude tool (or any other type of transformation tool) are also in centimetres. For example an extrusion along the local Z axis of 75 is an extrusion of 75cm.

If I'm going off plans I tend to use reference objects (ie.. cubes set to the size of certain measurements) or I use the distance tool to measure out distances and snap to them.

↑ that.

Also, make use of perspective views and 'snap to grid' with components selected (with said grid being set up to have the proper amount of subdivisions). Very fast way to work, as long as your required measurements aren't fractions of a cm.

Thanks for the tips. I totally forgot about the distance tool, that will come in handy.

Distance tool is very slow, try this as a shortcut for faster measuring:
