Object Rigging Suggestions

Hey guys I have this simplified version of what I'm actually trying to do.


Having trouble thinking about how I can rig this with those two curves as controllers. I want the top and bottom to be able to move apart without actually stretching the criss-crossing cylinders, if you know what I mean. Like in order for the top and bottom to move apart, the rings would need to contract, and if they move closer together, they would expand.

I also want to attach spheres wherever the diagonal cylinders intersect.


I'm pretty noob to this, so I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around this. Is the way to just use a bone structure? or do I need to use clusters or a series of expressions? Any help would be great. Thanks!
