Question Carlos, the carrier.

Hey guys!

It's been a while... Im not lazy, just busy with the everyday work. BUT now i must relax due to a little medical "happening". Anyway, meet Carlos (my fiancee give him this name btw). I saw him on an old paper photo a few years ago, and as soon i saw him i decided that i have to make it in 3D. I dont know, it captured me instantly... So, some technical details:
Big big thanx to Ten24 for the skin shading technique (the patient), i had to tweak it a little bit for my taste. Of course the hat and the beard is fiberfx, but the tiny fibers of the cords were made in post, not too many, just a few here and there for better result. The lighting is quite simple: DP infinite +area, the overall polycount in modeler: 156K, there are two main fiber settings for the hat, one for the little ones and one for the biggers. The beard is entirely controlled by two main maps, a density map and another map for the size (+ color, of course). For the skin i used the usual maps.
Well; i hope you like him!

ps: is it good enough to submit him into the 3dstills category?

Awesome work, Hat is so good that i really wonder how many different types of fibers you have there :d. How did you colorize them? Some wacky image map for color or just series of different colors to each fibers group ?

cheers

There are only 2 type of fibers (big and wide, and small & tiny), as i said they are controlled by density and length maps. I also used the density map for variations, but basically they are all the same. And yes, there is a big wHacky image map for the colors

Wonderful image.. so vibrant and full of colour. Very impressive use of Lightwave FiberFX, I like how some of the fibres look matted together in places.

Thumbs up

one thing bothers me, why did you upload it in this thread of WIP? clearly its awesome and completed and one of the best work i have seen and surely eligible for 3d showcase gallery.

if it was in my hand, i would have just given you an cg award. awesome work.

Well the answer is simple:
"Your image currently does not meet the general quality level of the Showcase Gallery."

don't tell me that they rejected this work.

Maybe if there was some more detail/contrast on the skin shader it would help sell the image a bit more. It all looks a little blurred out. Wicked image though!

I think this is a great work overall.
But its me or the head is looking a bit on the left side as compare to neck placement and the face texture is not as sharp as the textures on other surfaces looking fade to me or missing bump just my thinking.

I agree with you; but with more bump he looked like a plastic doll, well at least for my eyes. Oh and about the head placement: thats on purpose; my first intension was to create a very tired broken "gesture" (maybe it is not the best word for it, but you get it) His nose was broken too on the first wips, but that was too odd :]
