Want to model, but aren't very smart

Hey I'm really interested in making video games the only problem is that I'm not a very smart person. In fact by many standards you could say that I'm possibly the stupidest person there ever was.... like ever in the entire cosmic dimension.

With that being said I want to just be able to model stuff that looks mechanical. Maybe at a later date I'll think about modeling stuff that's made out of stuff that isn't metal or plastic.

I want to be able to turn little 3 or 4 centimeter widgets into an interesting combination that I could make look cool.

Well you can turn on a computer and create a thread on cgsociety, that's not bad for stupidest person :P.

Building mechanical meshes is pretty straight forward:

Also look for DVD's at the gnomon workshop & eat3d.com for example. Zbrush is getting pretty solid for hard suface work too.

3D modelling isn't as much about intellect as it is practice. Honestly, there are probably a lot of brilliant modellers who create amazingly realistic and detailed things who are completely useless when it comes to anything like math or whatnot. Conversely, there are people with genius level IQ's who wouldn't be able to do it if their life depended on it. What I have learned is that the more time you devote to learning 3D modelling, the less relevant intelligence becomes. If you "aren't very smart", then the worst that could happen is you may need more time to learn the basics, but it'll all come to you as long as you work at it enough. Just remember, unless you do it full time (which most people can't thanks to the real world), it can take several years before you know what you're doing. Even then, there will always be something new to learn. For example, I finally started making a serious effort to learn 3D modelling about a year ago, and even though I've come a long way, I still feel like I know next to nothing :P

To quote Nike, "just do it". With enough effort, you'll figure it out, regardless of how smart you may or may not be.

Hang in there, do not give up.

Years ago, I wanted to model and model, but it did not hit home, except for simple forms.

Then yrs later, somehow it just hit me. . . Every non organic form, is made up of very simple forms.... look around and observe, you will see it.

Now begin to slowly build the object slowly, part by part to put it together.

Good Luck!

The important thing here is the talent or at least the creative part, not that much of intellect. This doesn't mean that we are all idiots, in fact, i think that it keeps my mind very active.

YouTube has tons of videos of people modeling things with different software.
