Caustics in interior lighting

I am using 3ds max 2013 and mental ray. I have an interior scene setup, which uses an mr daylight system, and a sky portal over the window. I have some glass shelves and a couple of wine glasses and I am wanting to try and use caustics to help them look more realistic.

I have switched on generate caustics on all the glass objects and also on the daylight system and the sky portal and have activated the generate caustics in the render setup.

When I render I get this message for both the daylight system and the sky portal 'no photons stored after emitting 10000 photons'

From what I have read online I think it is because there aren't enough caustic photons hitting my caustic objects, or something like that.

What do I need to do to get caustics to work properly in a scene like this? I don't want to add any more lights as I have the lighting the way I want it. Is there a way I can correctly use the sky portal or daylight system to generate caustics?
