Modelling a simple face

Hi all,

I've decided to recently get into animation and modelling. I'm following the vertex pusher tutorials and created a few low poly character models in Cinema 4D.

I am able to model a reasonably advanced face (eyes & sockets, nose, mouth) though I am trying to create a very simple model and I'm having trouble creating a very simple face.

I've seen other simple 3D characters with 'flat' faces (i.e. No extruding polygons for eyes and mouth). It seems the face has been formed by the materials but they still seem to have expressions like blinking and raised eyebrows.

Can anyone please explain to me how this is done for low poly models?

They use an animated texture map.
