FXWARS Challenge:37 - KBoom! - Wirginia Romanowska

Hello!

Nice idea for challenge. I will see what I can do. So far I made some tests with FumeFX (I will post later), and with Phoenix FD. I'm kind of limited on it to demo version... bur it gives quite interesting results as for couple of hours work.

Are you frosting it and adding a toon shader? I have done that before messing around awhile back. These guys have made cool examples.

These look good ,

Not found a way yet to get FumeFX to a cell shader - it is proving difficult, and do not have Phoenix FD.

Tried PFlow and Blobmesh and it looks , well, bad...

i do have V-Ray 2 and Krakatoa, so this project maybe a good reason to get Frost + Phoenix FD.

Thanks for the examples bd7, there are not many of them... Renders I have posted are made that sim is Phoenix FD, and just rendered with Vray toon shader. (rendering uses solid mode for Phoenix FD).

PexElroy - you can get demo version of Phoenix FD. And once you have that, you just need vray to render toon... You don't need any mesher for Phoenix FD, because it has it's own "solid" mode which will produce hard mesh for you, and you can apply any shader you like to it

I do find Fume FX sim easier to control... But only way (from what I know) to get mesh from fume FX is through Krakatoa and Frost... Too much work - not enough time.

And at the end I'm sure that flash animated cartoon explosion would look great... but that's different chapter for me. If I can't get anything out of 3d I might check that as well.

It's going to be a lot of experimentation I think...

If you have access to Frost, you should be able to mesh FumeFX with a simple FumeFX follow node in either TP or PFlow. I haven't tried it with FumeFX before, but it should work.

I might have to try out that demo of PhoenixFD, looks like an interesting tool. I'll be looking forward to seeing your experiments with it!

Thanks for the tip, nmcelmury, I didn't know that I don't need to use kakatoa.

I made few tests with fumeFX - this is just rendered in scaline. It looks more like fake drawing than fake cartoon, I guess...

I will spend some time on experimenting with different techniques, and will try to make decision which way to go at the end of weekend...

Here is test with FumeFX and Frost (no Krakatoa). Rendered with toon Vray. I think this is best result so far. This is why I decided to push it a little bit further. You can see where this is going...

Yes these look great! Thanks for posting.
Frost + V-Ray toon render is so far the best option, if one does not have Phoenix FD.

do like where you are going with this, oh my.
Plan to pick up Frost on Monday next week

It would be cool to see some paper texture in these.

Like in Disney's "Paperman"?

That would be cool

But I have tried Flash animation and it's actually easier to do than it looks. I might post some results... Bu I'm not sure how far 2D animation is allowed here?

Ok, I have done my first ever explosion in Flash, here it is:
(Click on the picture to see animation)

I know there is plenty of room for improvement, I especially don't like how it dissolves...

I'm still testing various techniques to get the explosion itself right. Also I know that shading will be very important. Until I finalise shading look I will post my WIP rendered in grey scale. This week I made some progress on rigid body sim and debris animation for the explosion.

Model was provided by my friend and very good modeller Martyn Taylor.
