Mouse wheel scrolling - like watching paint dry or getting fired out of a cannon

Any fix for the mouse wheel scrolling in Photoshop? I read that it was fixed in CS6 but it isn't..
I mean seriously, should we have to scroll the wheel enough times to roll it across the entire desk 5 or 6 times before it scrolls down 20% of the screen? What is up with that? =/
It's crippling to a workflow.. and the only other option to speed it up, launches you off the screen in 2 a single tad of the wheel rotating? Is it just me, or is that totally insane?
Does anyone know any way at all to fix this? I've tried tweaking the mouse wheel settings native to Windows but they don't affect it at all..
If there's no solution to this, no way to modify the speed, think I'll have to switch back to PSP.
Anyone have any ideas? Cheers =)

Also, would be great if there was a plugin that switches to the hand tool and counts it as left clicked in while you hold middle click, then releases it and switches back to your previous tool when middle click is released.. anyone know of anything like this? I'm trying the Overview, but it's no good when you're zoomed right in to an 80k px texture map..
Navigation in PS is shockingly bad for a mainstream app, feels like the Lightwave of 2D..
Seriously, if it weren't for the file size limits, I'd be sticking with PSP 7, hasn't done me wrong for 10 years until that, but I really need PS to be usable.

You could use a mouse driver to assign middle click to space bar only when in photoshop. Im sure they are out there.

Personally I use spacebar and a Wacom tablet and memorised/customised the keyboard shortcuts, one hand over the keyboard the other on the pen.

PS. If you hold shift it scrolls really fast, ctrl+shift does the same only sideways

Ok now I just feel like an idiot for not knowing about the space bar's function..
Nice one mate, I can work with that!
And will probably re-assign it to Middle click also

I use a mouse for Photoshop. Spacebar and left click-drag does the job for me.
I like to learn.

Honestly, I never quite understood why Adobe Products shun the middle mouse button for panning the view - scroll wheel for zoom in & out, middle mouse button for panning: efficient and lightning fast.

Once you get used to this, you never look back - that is, until you work in Adobe products. Sigh. After 13 versions of Photoshop you'd think they would at the very least offer a quick preference option to give us that.
