Masking/Hiding Polygroups

I'm working on a Tutorial to create a robot in Zbrush.

The tutorial shows the instructor extracting a mask which puts it into a polygroup, so far so good, then he shows himself using a lasso select tool to hide 4 holes in the mesh. He simply surrounds them with the lasso, and they are gone, leaving the rest of the polygroup.

I try that and it hides everything but what I've selected.

I've tried everything and can't seem to figure this out.

Thank you for any advice. And yes, I've searched google for answers and it always leads me here, but I haven't found what will specifically answer my question.
