Tablets and their pens

Before I begin let me say that I have never used a tablet and I am complete illiterate to their working and needs. So, I was recently gifted two tablets:

- Intuos4
- Bamboo Fun

With them arrived a generic pen which neither tablet, OS X 10.6.8, or Photoshop recognize. I've tried my google-fu, downloading all types of drivers, but nothing seems to get the pen to work. So, right now I am looking at plopping down $60+ to buy a replacement Intuos4 Pen. But before I do, I want to make sure that this is the way to go. Will the pen work with both tablets? Or is every model pen assigned to specific tablet model?

Sorry for the noobie questions but this is my first time working with these things.

Unfortunately, the pens are unique per line and per generation; you can't use a bamboo pen on an intuos or vice versa.
