Speed Modelling 15

Welcome to the new speed modelling.
We are a couple of members here now that try to rotate the activities between us, if you got some ideas for items that we model or if you want to post a thread on your own let us know.
Let's just try to stick with weekly activites otherwise with my personal experience in here it is difficult to keep the ball rolling.
There will be a new thread every Saturday from different members.

This weeks theme has a 2hour time limit on each item, you decide how fast you want to model. + 4 different extra items, to build a scene or perhaps objects that you can use for a project....

Items (2 hours time limit for each of the items)

-human ear
-wine barrel
-ornate scroll
-sea chest

Extra items ( no time limit)

It was surprisingly fast to make a rope, I guess it depends on the method. Made mine with 4 circles and a screw modifier....

Doing a rope was also easy in Maya - just used the poly-helix-primitive

Funny how you make a speedy model and then spend forever to make a composition and render the thing, hilarious.

Hey whom, nice job you did on the ear, did you had your own as reference? And how did you modelled it?

I did myself one a lil while ago and posted it in the WIP thread. Might do one more, maybe of an old man, old men have those really big, thin ears.

Just wanted to write something that you are not alone posting - I do something from the list tomorrow! Where did all the people go to?

There is a treasure chest! What might be in there? Does someone have a key? ^^

Maybe a treasure hunting scroll can help:

XD please don't comment on the painting...
don't know if you had this in mind with "ornament roll" - just thought would fit to the theme (as I think the overall theme is something with adventure and treasure hunting, sailing and such)

Sundaynights, thank you, yea I modeled from a sideview picture of an ear. Only had that view though so had to feel my way with the model, difficult to get some parts down...

You are mentioning one problem with this section as people tend to leave the sessions, hard to get an overall activity but I don't mind these days. Hardest thing is to come up with good ideas for items, you seem to have good ideas for this section.
Ornate scroll is I think the word for it in English, those decorative details on old doors., windows, frames and such. I know it is Ornament in your native German, the same in Swedish. Maybe Ornamental in English... hmm not sure....
Ich kannst nicht so gut deutsche sprechen, lol.

You did a pretty good job with that ear, I also like your textures and lightning!

hm... now I know what you mean. modelling that would have been tough! I think that would be better with a transparency/opacity map or displacement/bump map.

Hello everyone!
Here are a few more models from one of my seniors. He kept VERY tightly within the time limits for this and I think he did an EXCELLENT job. I'm sure he would love to hear some other comments and suggestions!

For keeping in the timelimit its good, I think (but I am myself not too experienced)

But, as I can see from the texture, the modelling of the holes, or extruded parts are not so nice, he should have inserted more edges around the spot where he wanted to make the cutout and then doing the extrude-operation. And the inner part of the cap stops too early - or is there a hidden space with more sparkling gold and treasures?

I would also add, that this is a speed modelling challenge. texturing, lighting etc are all great to add on, but really the focus should be the model itself.

good job though to keep to the time limit, it's sooo easy to get sidetracked!

I can second that! Remember back from the Fight Club days, only model in default gray and wires. . . .
