Rigging an Artist Dummy?

Ive attempted rigging in 3ds max before, by using biped and , seperetly, the bones system, im not animating im only posing for stills. I have created an artist dummy model and im needing to rig this character so that the limbs will move as in a true dummy, and not deform the balls that pose the joints.

As im very new to all this can someone atleast point me in the right direction or give any useful tips, as i type i am scouring the forums and faq's and tutorials.

many thanks :-)

If you are moving one of those wooden dummy's then as the wood will not deform, you can simply create a standard biped (or even better a bones skeleton), aligning the pivots of your joints to the 'ball' sockets pivots and then simply parent all of your geo to the bones with no skinning.

Ok, as im very keen to learn all facets of this software, and waited nearly a year to even bother with bones/bipeds etc.... I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of some good tutorials, ive spent a few hours searching and another hour watching but thus far none of them seem to help with specifically what i need.

How do i parent the individual segments (arms, legs etc..) to thier respective bones?

As my artist dummy model is still polygrouped (each limb seperate) is this right? , or should i unify the model? , ive created a biped, and a bones system, and although the bones are parented properly all i need is how to "skin" them , without skinning to prevent deformations. Then im guessing i will have to get onto learning about IK and weighting?

Simply use the link tool (looks like a paper clip in the top left)
