After Effects never playing back realtime

I have an Hp Pavillion dv6 (Windows 7) with an intel core i7 and six gigs of ram. I also have an Hp w2207h monitor.

i run Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere CS5.5 as well as Autodesk Maya 2011.

I downloaded after effects a while ago and it has been having a lot of problems(crashes, never closes properly, can never playback ram previews in full time, no matter the resolution). However, Maya runs perfectly fine. I have always associated After Effects problems with the computer using so much ram, but Maya works fine.

I'm curious about why it's always using so much ram, and if it has anything to do with why after effects runs so slow. Please Help!

Thanks.

Same problem here. After Effects 5.0 on a Mac. I can scrub through the timeline, but it either crashes or just sits there not previewing.
