how to mask images with alpha channels

hi all
can someone tell me how to use a black and white image to mask my original image
yeah the alpha channels...
no idea about it in photoshop
but i do know white means totally transparent and white means totally opaque..
but how to mask images with that so they show up in few parts only
please help

Using layer masks of course. Check out the in-built help system, becuase I'm too lazy to explain it again...
