MA file size explosion...

Hey Maya guys,

I recently came up with a strange problem:
We have an animation file which is 6 MB in version one.
One day later our animator fixed some issues and after that we've had a file size of 600 MB. o_O
Examining the file I found out that this version had an enormous amount of animation layers which had been imported but are totally useless. I deleted these layers, the scene was 140 MB smaller but still is far away from being 6 MB.
Does anybody know what could be done to reduce the file size again?
By the way I used "Optimize" but I could only scale the file size down to approx. 380 MB (inlcuding the animation layer reduction).

Thanks in advance

Does the rig have muscles? If so, the muscle cache(s) (stored internally in the scene) can get rather large.

Is there any chance referenced assets were imported when the animator made his fixes? This would explain the massive increase in file size.

yes this could also potentially be a problem in naming object..such symbol or letter other than the classic AB.Z123..ect..
it could also be a light linked problem that I don't know if has been corrected, that used to add connection from light to object and they would add and add and never stop and make your file size grow exponentially!

Thanks for your tips.
Unfortunately I can say, that the animator did not add any new objects, and did not import any references (they are still references).
We do not use muscles as well. :(
And I also have to deny that we did any new linking, so I guess there was something going wrong deep down in the rabbit's hole.

I assume it's in .ma format. Have you tried opening the file in a text editor? You'll most likely where the problem lies in there.
