career and school

I've always loved art and I've lately gotten into digital 2d art and 3d modeling. I have really been considering doing computer graphics as a career. I'm wondering if it is necessary to go to a art or video game specific college such as digipen in order to get a good job in this field. I'm going to be going to a regular university in september and I'm hoping that I can pursue this without an art or video game school. Does anyone know about this and what a good major choice is? I am a total beginner at 3d but my 2d skills are good, I just have to make the jump to digital a little better (im slowly improving).
