Study in Germany: Berlin vs Darmstadt

Hello everybody,

I'm a Romanian highschool student currently having a dilemma with regards to my future education in Germany.
My first option is Berlin:
http://gd-bachelor.htw-berlin.de/en/
My second one is Darmstadt (German only):
http://ag.fbmd.h-da.de/

The main difference is that, (ironically) in Darmstadt you have all courses in English, and also Darmstadt is a smaller city, yet I don't really know which of these two places would represent a better place for me to study.

I have a decent knowledge of 3D Studio Max, as I used it for isometric 2D game modding, also I have a basic idea of what programming means. I'm quite good at Photoshop and have basic knowledge of Illustrator.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps someone here can tell more about the differences between the two, but I must say that I am impressed with the Web Site and how the program is portrayed in Darmstadt.

Darmstadt is not a bad place, and Frankfurt is just up the road with anything that anyone would want. ( also where I am located, ;-) )

Will have to look and see if anything of their students are online or not.

But good luck!

It's probably a matter of life style. In Berlin you are flashed with being around any kind of people...really you have everything there. That can be very inspiring!

On the other side, Berlin is dirty and anonymous.

I don't know Darmstadt but it's definetly a different kind of city and much smaller.

Cannot say anything about the educational pov though but your environment is just as important for your studies as the program itself.

Hi, You could come to Heidelberg
I am teaching at SRH University of Applied Sciences, Heidelberg, we have a great game development curriculum and connections to the industry (Deck13 for example).
Check it out: http://www.hochschule-heidelberg.de...of-informatics/

Sadly, Heidelberg costs too much for me. Sorry. :(

Another question: Isn't it difficult to start a career in Germany as a game designer? I mean, I understand that both study programs include a practice period.Thing is, I don't wanna end up jobless after finishing Uni.

Its as difficult as anywhere else. Your portfolio decides, not Your degree.

Darmstadt. Courses in english, closer to Frankfurt which means more and better paid job than in Berlin, less competition(everybody and his dog is in Berlin right now underbidding each and everyone) and it's not that overhyped and overrun.
Crytek is in Frankfurt, so is Pixomondo(ahem) and das Werk.

Berlin is still a great place to live and to party, but it's also easier to get distracted. Living cost have gone up, especially for housing (my first flat , a run down hole in a backyard, no heating, no warm water, cost me 50€ in 1994, my last flat, quite the same did cost me 300€ and it's almost impossible to get another one that cheap now, it also got extremely harder to get a flat at all).
