Maya Mari Mudbox basic workflow question

I'm not really understanding why I am seeing webpages with tutorials for making UVs for models in Maya in preparation for texturing in Mari. I thought Mari was all about being able to import a model with no UVs necessary at all, because of PTex.

So, in general, can't I just import each part (ie.wheel, hood etc) separately into Mari, paint it, stick it back into Maya, all done?

I have the same confusion about the connection with Maya and Mudbox.

Can someone clear this up for me as simply as possible? I won't be doing animation, btw.
