Mudbox sees 16-bit stamps as 8-bit?

Question Mudbox sees 16-bit stamps as 8-bit?

The stamp I made has a lot of smooth gradients in it, so using 8-bit grayscale was giving me stairs step patterns and banding. I made a new 16-bit stamp, but it has the same problem. I can see in Photoshop that it is using the full range of 16 bit color since it looks nice and smooth (converting it back to 8 bit there is a noticeable difference) but for whatever reason mudbox seems to convert it to 8-bit when using it as a stamp. Is there any way to get Mudbox to use the stamp's full color range?

is it possible that your mesh is huge..?
i mean several hundred meter..?

try to scale it down to 10 meter or so...

The mesh is the plane.mud file that comes with Mudbox. Why would the mesh size make a difference anyway?

the mud plane should be fine...
if your mesh is really big mudbox isnt precise enough to get clean results if you try to displace the mesh with the stencil...

or are you painting a bumpmap..?
have you created a 16bit paint layer..?

thats a jpg... they are always 8bit...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there an option to filter textures when using them as stamps and displacement? That would smooth it out, even at 8bit.

Yeah, tinypic converted it into a jpeg. the original was a png.
