The changes are subtle. I wouldn't have cared enough to notice if not pointed out. My daughter doesn't really care about this particular line of toys but it gets into the house every now and then. I think the whole product line is stupid.

Now Lego Friends and Fur-real friends, that's another story. She loves her animals.

I did like the character Merida, she had a bit of wild animal in her that I appreciated and reminded me nothing of a "princess" in the Disney sense. I can understand Chapman being upset having no control over her creation. Too bad there is little she'll be able to do about it.

I notice Esmeralda has been chucked from the Princess roster.

The changes are kind of small and subtle that had I not read the article I honestly would have just put them down to just artistic variance.

Wasn't it the whole point of the movie that Merinda didn't want to become 'this' kind of princess? Besides, since when is it necessary (and O.K.) to 'sex up' toys for CHILDREN?

Haha, I was thinking the same thing...its like, they are all up in arms about the redesign (which looks pretty much the same imho) and forget that all these characters are "princesses" role models.

It's Disney sexing something up to sell, it doesn't surprise me but it's still pretty disgusting.

I agree with what this guy says:

"This is what Disney is all about. They have dumbed down countless pieces of classic literature for their own profits to fit in with the image makers who have sexualised children and given girls in particular the limited ambition to be 'cute.'"

Also if you don't have kids, no offense, but you really can't relate to this.

Sexing it up? Several of the princess looked more covered up than their cartoon versions.

Of course by most standards it did very well, but by theirs not so much, and I don't know how well the toys did.

I actually really liked Brave, practically everything about it in fact, and disagree with the above (which is just the facts and not how I perceive the movie), but it's hardly an IP that Disney might want to safeguard the integrity of.

I can see why the angst, mind you, but I agree one would think there'd be more pressing and important problems worth petitioning against/for than a costume re-design for a Disney Princess.
Sure, perpetuating gender stereotypes is far from ideal, and if you had created a character meant to transcend them and saw it rolled it into one you probably do get ferociously pissed off, but middle class toy induced potential gender stereotypes should take a slight back seat to some of the shit going on in the same States outraged by this...

Actually I am a bit surprised. You'd think they'd want as much variety as possible in their line up of princesses, so all different types of girls could have someone they can relate to or be a fan of.

Making them all very similar seems like a bad move. But then I don't know anything about this.

FYI this issue did make for discussion on the national (CBC) radio program here in Canada (although its the kind of current event that would). Thats where I first heard of it.

I too liked the film (better than most apparently). But I don't have much stake in the film. Neither did my son so its not too sacred.
However if it happened to be my child's absolute favorite heroine (for some reason) than i might be more bothered by the changes. For now its an amusing news item.
