just tested copying from H16 to Max 2018

Normals are flipped...ie. in Max, I have to apply a Normal modifier to get it looking right...

(not a scripter so no idea what's happening...but my guess is something went awry in converting Y in Houdini as up to Z up in Max ?)

and thanks to whoever the scripter is...

WARNING: noob at large...

so I went into the Copy script on Houdini side...where it writes pos 0, 1, 2...I changed it to 2,1,0..bang !!! in Max when pasted...the normal is right....anyway...that's my hack...I'll wait till the pros do the fix for real...

And thanks for the MAX to Blender tips videos as well!

(I'd like to see you do a full on Blender for MAX guys(gals) - simple project walkthrough... this is how we model, this is how we materialize, this is how we animate & set keys - types of animation possible, this is how we render/net-render, this is how we install/use plugins/scripts for addional functionality, etc. Each with the back-n-forth comparisons of showing the MAX thang then the Blender thang, etc)

update:

paste from max to other apps - basically working now -but needs some bug fixing

plugin version for rhino - on it's way - already has paste into Rhino working
plugin version for sktechup - on it's way - already has paste into sketchup working

hopefully i'm not derailing this thread too much!
but as someone who's most probably dropping subs this year, due to autodesk artificially raising prices on subs year on year to 'persuade' us to move to rental....

well any tools to help transition away from 3ds max to other apps is VERY welcome. The concept of being able to move models to from Max to any other app with a click is an awesome way to learn on the move but also we can quickly jump back to max when we need certain tools.


BTW how's max 2018 on stability?
I've not tried it yet so any feedback on that score would be most welcome.

Scale

suggestion, as said in prev post, I'm a non scripter so don't know if this is ridiculously hard/easy ?

this doesn't have to be another 'separate button' but if you could put somewhere in the code a ScaleMultiplier so that I can go in and manually change that to say 100 (or 0.01...whatever)...this is so I work in cm in Max, while in Houdini the default unit is m, so after I paste in either app, I don't have to rescale

If it can't be done....no stress, I can always manually scale after I paste.

it probably could be done, but it's based as you say from houdini coming to max
blender to max is 1:1 for example

however there are scale scripts out there such as this one, which i think (not tried it yet)
could do that job for you - give it a shot.

here's my hack:

01) to get 1:1 scale when copying from Houdini and pasting into Max when Houdini is using m and Max is using cm

02) no need to 'flip' Normals in Max

if len(geo.points()) > 0:
    f = open(filePath, "w")

    f.write("VERTICES:"+str(len(geo.points())) + "\\n")
    for point in geo.points():
        pos = point.position()*100 ### *100 to get 1:1 scale assuming in Houdini unit = m and in Max unit = cm
        f.write(str(pos[2]) + " " + str(pos[1]) + " " + str(pos[0]) + "\\n") ### swap 0,1,2 to 2,1,0 to flip normal in Max


tho would prefer a pro to do the normal 'flip', by me swapping the order..the normal is right but not the object in world space...so I guess it's quicker right now to leave as is to get the correct world space then just apply a Normal modifier

round tripping from max to blender and back to max.

currently the 3dsmax copy to script needs to have the objects as edit mesh.(early build)
in the video i also cover how to convert the tri mesh back to quads in blender plus how to add short cut keys in blender to make it simpler/faster to use.

Yep...as a VFX/film guy, to paraphrase others in a different field: I didn't leave Max/Autodesk...they left me.
