Question Rigging separate parts?

One thing that has sort of baffled me for a while now is how game models attach thing such as clothes, armor, and other separate parts together with the main model onto a single rig. I've tried this myself, but it's never really worked and I don't get how all these separate elements move accordingly as one. That being said, rigging is perhaps my weakest aspect in Maya. Can anyone explain how this is done or direct me to a good tutorial that explains it?

Depending on what the object is, you can skin it or just parent constrain it to the rig. For non nCloth clothing I will usually bind it to the main skeleton hierarchy then copy skin weights from the main mesh to the clothing. This requires you to have similar topology to the main mesh though or else you will get some funky penetration.

If you are just working with a hat or something you can just parent constrain it to the rig.
