Question Manipulating image without rendering to file

Hello
I'm getting familiar with Blender/Python/Nodes for some time now and I'm wondering if there's possibility of manipulating image we see in Composite Node without rendering it to file and then loading back in. I want to make a multi-threshloding on the image (divide to segments basing on brightness) and save each threshold as separate file with alpha=0 for pixels not belonging to the threshold, but so far I didn't find any way around the issue mentioned above.
I guess there is some way, 'cause otherwise it would be kinda ridiculous, but I can't find it...
