perforated panel with maya+vray.

hi guys, first of all i'm a newbbie with maya and vray (i hope that's the right place to post my questions).
i'm modeling a panel with many holes. this panel should have a thickness, so my question is: how can i obtain it by using just a map? should i use a combination of opacity+displacement or bump'? how?
the point is that i don't want model every single holes but i would do that with a map. i would find the faster way to do that.
please help me.
