(Advanced) Writing my own plugin - what do I need?

I've always wanted to create a custom Swatches -panel.
I would like to set it up as big labeled thumbnails (name at the bottom of the thumbnail) or as the default "small list" but with two columns instead.
Both of these variants would be just a minor change to the default panel, so it would appear to be an easy task. However I have no idea where to start.

Would I write that plugin/extension in javascript? I know Photoshop supports both javascript, applescript or VBscript and out of these I would prefer the first one.
But where can I find the source code for the default Swatches panel? I'm not a programmer and my coding skills does not go beyond minor modifications - so I would like to keep things as simple as possible.
