Indirect Lighting for Animation

So I'm completely new to 3D and I'm trying to learn Animation (hobby) and VFX(work, I'm primarily a 2D artist, looking to expand my skill set).

Ambient Occlusion, Final Gather, Global Illumination:
I was wondering what was commonly used in the industry for VFX? Or are they all used based on the effect?

Which is most common in character animation? Is one better for a single computer animator? Would it be likely any of these techniques are used in this animation style:

I've been reading and using digital tutors about each of these techniques and how to use them. It's mostly technical information though, I'm curious about actual common application. If this question has been answered elsewhere please link me, I haven't been able to find anything!
