Glowing Retinas

I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to create the effect that eyes have on a light source in the dark. I understand that it's a combination of the iris being wide open due to the darkness, which then allows a lot of light to bounce off the retina, but I have no idea how to create this in Maya.
Thanks much,

If the pupil in the geometry is really a hole, then you can try and put some ramp to the incandescence of the inside of the retina, and then drive the ramp, based on the facing ratio of the inner retina surface. Here is a quickie using VRay, but it applies for everything.
