Disney brings augmented reality to toys via iDevices

Quote:

"

A range of Disney DreamPlay Toys that come to life when using a tablet or smartphone have been revealed.

The Augmented Reality products, made by Jakks Pacific, were shown off for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. They incorporate NantWorks’ 'groundbreaking' iD image recognition technology, which recognises images, 3D objects, voice, speech, data, live video and more, with the capability to differentiate between millions of objects at once.

This allows kids to use a physical toy to play iOS/Android app games and view animations using a tablet or smartphone.

are we not able to find a better use for AR then to sell inanimate objects that "activate" content on digital devices?

why does this annoy me...

I'm wondering why children need toys that can interact with their smartphones and tablets

If it's any consolation, another article about the toys goes on to say:

Wait, what is augmented reality?
Augmented reality has massive business and tech implications, from interactive train windows to being able to point your phone at any home in a neighborhood to see its sales history, to turning a desk into a touchscreen device, and so forth.

They probably already use this technology in military applications like for maps and things.

Probably.....
