xNormal problem

I'm sure this is a pretty basic question for some. I'm baking out some normal maps (using xnormal for the second time). Any idea why I get strange results with one particular object?

I am using the XN plugin to export HP and LP meshes of rocks from 3DS Max. Some have worked fine. But I have one that produces a result as shown in the attachment.

I have let the ray distance tool run for up to 20 secs on this one. I have one smoothing group applied to my low poly. I have also tried creating my own cage in 3DS Max.
