Talk with people who actually WORK on site. Several get work through their Unions. No one can work without proper authorization and safety certificates on many sites, and hiring is done through companies with business licenses that people can actually look up. They pay for your plane ticket to get to Ft. McMurray and back to either Calgary or Edmonton.

Last I looked, having corporations like Suncor, Syncrude, CEDA, Shell, Horizon Oil, JV Driver's, sign your paycheques is not a scam, and on top of that those plane tickets workers DO NOT have to pay for.

A drug and prostitution sector in Alberta....there's drugs and prostitution wherever money is to be made. Nothing new! You been to Yaletown in Vancouver on a Friday night lately? East Hastings? Surrey ain't no monastery either. :P

It ain't hard NOT to get involved with drugs and/or prostitution. Avoid the bars, very easy thing to do, and just work. 10-12 hour shifts of work...only those who really aren't focused on their jobs and earning money seek drink and sex, and they tend to let go of those workers.

Well you sound defensive and dont need to be. These were towns set up specifically to target the oil workers according to the news report.
Pretty ugly stuff that hadnt been there before.

Last I looked on the "news" Surrey police confiscated a sniper rifle in a broom closet of a home and a cocaine trafficker was shot in a drive by...so obviously there's a gun and drug problem in Surrey that wasn't there before. Pretty ugly stuff.

Point is, you focus on the one off situations you miss out on the entire picture and opportunity. As anyone who's "Professionally Unemployed" they should reconsider entering a different trade instead of wasting the productive years of their lives when there's plenty of opportunity in another industry that needs people and pays a hell of a lot more from the get go.

Municipalities are NOT set up willy nilly, they have to go through City Council and urban planning. So your mere statement "These were towns set up specifically to target the oil workers" is very misleading and very erroneous.

So, we conclude: let's all go to Quebec but forget about Framestore (because they pay terribly anyway) and let's drill for oil!

Conclusion: Keep your eyes open for opportunity in different sectors.

If you're a CG Artist, there's opportunity in visualization for the construction AND oil industry.

Oh.... so you are some kind of regional supremacist? I heard we had those in the West but never encountered one before.
lol
You should take your complaints to the BBC world service though for not singling out every other place with crime problems when it did the news report.
