Need pointers on a pose

Hi ,

I'm working on a commissioned illustration depicting a team of people (defenders) protecting a helpless civilian. One of the defenders (image below) is pushing back the horde with two sticks while looking back at the civilian to make sure he's ok. Her pose is suppose to show the stress of pushing back with all you must against a crowd.

My question: Is the pose effective enough to show the struggle? I might just been staring at it for too long, but it seems like she's just resting on the sticks. How can I improve it?

She doesn't look like she's putting all her might into it, because in order to do so, she'll need to tense up her body to be as rigid as possible, and with her center of gravity fully at the front. She needs to lock as many of her lower joints as possible, turning her body into a rigid pole propped against the horde.

Pushing back a horde with two sticks is kind of odd. What's the logic behind that? Is the horde mindless zombies that don't know how to duck under the sticks?

Have you tried taking photo references? This is always the best way to get things right.

Thank you for replying.

Good point - I should straighten her limbs and tense up her body.

The sticks are props more or less. They would be wider. Horde is not of zombies but of other people. Heated demonstration if you will. So they can duck, and probable will, but these are the first moments of contact.
