extrude stencil by alpha channel (black or white)?

Hi there
I have made a stencils in painter and which is black and white. Is there some how an easy way to use this stencil and make a poly surface from the black parts and extrude the surface to make a 3d place mat.
If maya can't do it, will any program do it?
I have done it in zbrush but there is way to many polys. I have also tried using illustrator the there seems to be thousands of vertices in the curves, which i would have to edit.
I have a reprap 3d printer and I'm wanting to print it as a stl, but that's another thing.
See attachment.

Not sure this is what you are looking for, but you can use .ai files to create geometry in maya.

You probably would have to tweak your stencil several times in illustrator in order for this to work ok, but it can be done. Read the maya docs though, there are specific requirements in the .ai file format.

I think any 'auto' way of creting something like that will have a lot of points.
Tweak your trace settings in illustator if you are looking to go that route and you could smooth the edges out a bit...cutting down the number of verts if you bring the curves into maya.
There is also the Modify > Convert > Texture to Geometry command which I have had some luck with after spending some time tweaking settings.

The big thing I will point out is that aside from the slight noise on the edges this is a single slice of mesh repeated/flipped 6 times. So you could really just focus on cleanig up one slice and then duplicate/flip to rebuild the whole circle.

Anyway, hope that helps a little

And of course, two other options...

1) displacement + opacity mapping
2) stamp brush in mudbox, I am sure you can do this too in zbrush (even maya I think)
