Gamasutra: Realistic sales numbers for an unknown PC title

Quote:
"I have been developing Flash Games for the past 3 years and in December of last year I decided it was time to make the move to standalone PC titles.
Survivor Squad is a Strategy Action PC game that focuses on Squad management using true line of sight and highly randomized levels. The game was developed over the course of 6 months using Unity with C#.
Here's an
interesting video that showcases the development process.

I did all the code (except for the A* Pathfinding) and art by myself and bought
sound effects, music and voice acting.

The entire cost to develop the game was just below $350.

Hhhhmmmm

I guess anything is cheap to make if you don't pay yourself for six months.

Now this is actually useful information. I wish more creators would do that, even Kindle authors, indie comic guys and others. It could be an inspiration and education to other creators who might be on the fence about taking the plunge and doing an indie product. I know some guys who did good stuff but, because of the numbers, gave up. If they knew that this was common, and that it usually builds and builds and builds with each new creation, they might have continued to push forward.

My game has cost roughly $5000 on plugins, libraries, extra software etc.
But if I was to bring in my salary, living expenses, etc, it would probably be in the $100 000 range or so.

I could probably do the game now for around $50 000, which is *only* 3500 sales - definitely an achievable goal.
