Dol Portrait WIP

Hello all,

I'm beginning a portrait of my fiancée, and would appreciate your comments and guidance as I progress. The stages of the image so far are here:

The main reference photo is below. (Note that the photo was taken at an angle that I've adjusted in the portrait.)

I think you're doing a really very nice job. Be careful with anatomy that is unseen. Looking at your photo, I think the hidden shoulder would be higher. Don't flatten the hair too much.

Portraits are difficult...but I'll bet she's pleased, especially because you did it.

Thanks a lot, Cris--that's very helpful. When you say not to flatten the hair too much, are you referring more to the shape or the texture...or both?

Mostly the shape, Brian. You have to account for the shape of the skull and then hair fluffs on top of it. On occasion, you see people who have really flat hair, by heredity or use of water or hair products, but it usually is somewhat higher than the skull.

BTW, I meant to say that I really like and appreciate animated gifs to show work progress. They're very informative and get to see how an artist works.

Thanks,
Cris

Cris,

Thanks much for the sketch-over and comments. I've incorporated your suggestions and refined the picture some more... it definitely helped!
