Question Help improving my model

Hey guys, i'm currently working on a Gyphon scout ship from Star Trek in Maya, (I think that's the name, resources are quite scarce, I only have one image with alot of detail to work with)

As with all my models, once I've got the main shape I get to a point where I have trouble making it of a very high quality and rendering it properly. So far i've modelled out the panels of the front and top but somethings missing (ignore the grooves between panels) If anyone has advice or any links that would help with improving the model it'd be greatly appreciated!

Your model is good in topology.

This is one of those models where you shouldn't attempt to put everything into one mesh. I've seen it so many times and long ago was guilty of it myself. Your Sub-D model shouldn't always be one contiguous object. It makes it very hard to add any details without multiple artefacts and loop routing problems.

Thanks guys!

Yeah i'm trying not to have everything as one mesh, so I started off doing panels individually thinking i can hide verts inside the grooves, but it didn't look great. Also the edges on the wings make it look weirdly smooth even though they are all level...

And how can I avoid too many edge loops? Where two sections meet, if one has alot of detail/loops, then doesn't the other one need the same to ensure it has the same shape?

Two sections:
