Question basic question

you gave only structure for the previously modeled shapes - Is your work you can not replace the usual mapping? - difuse - bump - dispalacement - this is nothing surprising about -if it is not in the competition to show that this program is not just for painting and mapping - I think it is not sculpting that what you do - You sculped in 3dsmax - your basic model is too detailed - it is drill texture - maybe I am wrong, maybe not

Maybe I'm no one to reply you guys, Mudbox is a tool and you're right, is the strategic tool for this challenge. Anyways, and although Marat did put a lot of detail on his work, there's detail that can be done in max, at least on a reasonable performant computer, and this is when Mudbox comes in.

At the end, this is not a speed sculpting competition to see who get's the best out of a sphere. You must do the best image you can using Mudbox as your primary tool for sculpting and painting.

I see sculpting on his entry, hes sculpting is ellegant and not appreciable at first sight. Which is somethng quite amazing. Mudbox gives Painkiller a subtle touch, a subtle and stunning touch to what I'd say is already a master piece.

Moreover, and this is where I might be wrong and get kicked, I think that this is the correct approach to mesh detail. It will give the best result when rendering out of the box, it's quite low in polys at the end for proffesional pipelines other than realtime, games etc... and to finish, I can't even imagine how you unwrap the UVs of something like that ^^


I'd have done my entry more like this one if I could work a bit faster. I hope that experience brings me speed and quality equally.

I am stunned by the meticulous detail poured into this. Not to mention the concept art made me (excuse my language) shit bricks.


For those of you debating whether or not Mudbox is being used enough here's my two cents. I agree with lapsusmental.
It's impossible to model the really high-poly-details this piece contains in a regular 3D-packages like Maya or 3DSMax. And he hasn't really posted any of the texturing yet as I've seen which is bound to come.
General workflow is to make a proper basemesh with good topology to be able to accentuate details at wanted areas and you cannot create basemeshes (except for those that come with the program and they would prove quite useless to depict the concept he's aiming for in this case) in Mudbox. Period. There are no retopology tools either if you suddenly want to change the edgeflow around the lips for example. That's why they have a couple of nice buttons for sending between the different Autodesk Suite Programs.

Finishing up. Holy hell do I want to see this finished!

hey, i see what do you mean, but the challenge is not in creating a character and render of it solely in Mudbox, but in collaboration of software that artist/participant prefer, mostly in Mudbox ofcourse(despite the artist's taste since Mudbox primarily is a sculpting and painting package, then the sculpting and painting work must be done in Mudbox, and the basemesh for it - in program of artist's preference. i think, they made it clear in challenge FAQ.
if you can create a full textured character solely in Mudbox, then that's only a plus for you, but not a must for everyone.

I should not judge - but since this program is relegated to the background - and not a program where you can do self-image
