Question Exporting for 3D printing, too big, programs can't import? - Unsolved

Hey Guys,
I'm trying to find a way to export my mesh to any programs that can convert my mesh to STL, preferably optimized like ZBrush is able to do.
However, in order for me to reach the desired detail amount in Mudbox I have to subdivide the mesh quite a lot and if I export the file as OBJ it is bigger than 2 GB.
If I try to import that model to ZBrush for instance it won't load because it doesn't support my amount of RAM.
Is there any way at all to convert that big file to something more optimized or simply to STL without giving up on the amount of detail?
In other words, is there a proper way to use an extremely high-res Mudbox mesh for 3D printing?

Thanks a lot !

Thanks for the reply Cheesestraws !
First time I read about it, however, it does state that it simply exports to STL without file preparation and printing softwares can't take such large files, I need to find a proper way to decimate it first.

Yeah I actually tried it a few times, importing gets stuck on 50% for more than an hour and computer becomes unresponsive :/

1. No, can't do that
2. It seems 2014 will have retopology tools, however, the topology I have is fine, it's just that it's very high res for very fine detail and I need a decimation tool to optimize it, not to retopologize it :\

Thanks !
