Help with model, cant figure out problem

Hi, Im a student going into animation and I am currently working on a female model, while attaching the torso to the head this is what it looks like before I merge some edges:

and when I go to merge them, this happens, again and again even when i go back and try to fix it:

can someone tell me whats going on? I thought it was the faces in the wrong direction but after adjusting them they still did this.

check your vertices.

check faces.

try append poly to connect the two meshes.

Try merging the points instead of the edges (I know it's slower, but it may help you here).

Merge Threshold

Do you have a better view of the problem?

Try adjusting the merge threshold on the channels box. If not, merge the pair of vertices individually.

I would merge each vertex I wouldnt merge them all at once try that.

Like others have said, this is due to the merge edge functions collapsing the edges to a single vertex.

Do what roderick said and merge vertices in pairs.
Strange things often happen to me......
