mountian painting

After a busy summer the icy weather is giving me time to practice.

This is a series of attempts I made at the same picture. Things did improve with each try and I really began to understand what was going on in the image. But I still have a long ways to go.

The original.

Actually my second attempt. The first was dismal

Third try.

Fourth.

Are you trying to replicate the original as closely as possible, or are you just approximating it?

Just an approximation. I was trying mainly to replicate the textures and values. I'm pretty far off on the shapes, not great on the textures and I had to color pic to get the values.

On the first one I picked the values by eye and really missed. It did help me understand how colors affect each other. The third one I did a combination of picking colors by eye and color picking to see how close I'd come. Not very most of the time.

When you do exercises like this, it's important to have a set of goals in mind. For example, what are the artistic weaknesses you're trying to train? What are the missing skills you need to practice? You also have to consider what the image you chose actually offers you in terms of what you can learn from it. These factors will determine what you should be working on with your precious time and also what you shouldn't waste your time on.

Thank you for the advice. I will keep it in mind when choosing future projects.

What I learned from this is that there are several steps I need to perfect. I can see where breaking it down so that I concentrate on each step individually rather than trying to tackle everything at once would be helpful.
