how to model braided cable, that deforms

hi all

curious how to best go about modeling braided cable, such as aircraft cable, that will need to deform, and be somewhat detailed/close-up

the deformation would be simple--such as a gradual bend around a pulley

I can picture how to model it using helixes and spline wraps; And can also imagine doing something with displacement maps and a spline wrap. But maybe someone can set me off in the right direction

thanks a lot

i would model it like you would normally model a tire, model the smallest unique tile of the
structure on a flat plane, then clone it and wrap it into a cylindrical shape. after that you
can use a spline deformer to tie it to a 'curvature' spline.

But they're ever so small. That's why the rain is thin.

Check out Krotmonster's rope recipe in C4D : not exactly the same look, but lots of relevant tips.

Get the free plugin called reeper.

It even works with spline dynamics!
