3ds Max Mental Ray and normal maps

Hi Guys this is probably going to sound like a silly question but how do you get normal maps to show up using mental ray in 3ds max 2011.. I have a couple o photometric lights in a scene with final gather and gi turned on.. the normal map is applied as normal and shows up perfectly using scan line rendering but with mental ray its just not there.. if I crank it up to over 100 it goes black... I hope somone out there if laughing at how simple this is to solve and can help... Thanks in advance if you can :-)
