Attaching & Detaching Geometry

In Max I'm used to being able to detach and attach geometry without any fuss. I'm finding in Maya that when I perform an Extract operation, it's creating a group and parenting the components of the extraction to that group node. This results in me constantly having to do node cleanup/maintenance as I'm working on a model. Currently I'm having to expand the parent node in Outliner, Shift+P to unparent the components from that top node, clear history on the components, THEN I can delete that pesky group node without fear of deleting my geometry along with it.

Is there a more streamlined way to go about all of this, or are Maya users just used to constantly having to cleanup the rat's nest of nodes that Maya creates as you work on things?

Thanks for the reply. I just tried that and it still created a group node and parented the extracted components to that node.
