shaded pane and wireframe pane

I am trying to see if there is a way to display shaded/wireframe in one display pane, while another would display only shaded - here is the kicker - while in edit mode?

Right now I see a nice shaded model in one view, a shaded/wireframe in another, but as soon as I click to edit the vertices of the model, the shaded viewport surrounds the model with vertices. I don't want the vertices to show up in the shaded viewport while in edit mode, I just want the vertices to be displayed in the active viewport which I am modeling in.

Is this possible?

You could make an instance of the object and look at that in the shaded viewport while changing the topology of the original object, that would be the only way I'm aware of.

This seems so elementary to be able to set up a viewport like this, but it still hasn't been implemented - apparently. Your suggestion is a nice try, but the reason I would like to be able to set up my viewports like this is to have an unimpeded, real time view of the model as I manipulate the mesh. Right now, every time I would like to see what my edits to the mesh have done, I have to get out of edit mode and disable the wireframe mode. Once I see the changes, I have to re enable the wireframe and get back into edit mode. It would be so much nicer just to be able to look into another viewport and see the update in a shaded, non wireframe mode.
