You can create a headsUpDisplay and connect to whatever you want (if I understood correctly what you are looking for!)

Code:
import maya.cmds as mc from functools import partial def getResult(obj): myDistance = mc.getAttr('%s.distance' % obj) return myDistance startLocator = mc.spaceLocator(p=[0, 0, 0]) endLocator = mc.spaceLocator(p=[10, 0, 0]) myDistanceDimension = mc.distanceDimension(startLocator, endLocator) mc.headsUpDisplay( 'debugMe', section=1, block=0, blockSize='medium', label='Distance', labelFontSize='large', command=partial(getResult, myDistanceDimension), event='idle') #USE THIS TO REMOVE THE HEADSUP #mc.headsUpDisplay( 'debugMe', rem=True )
