Importing objects problem maya

Ok so I'm fairly new to Maya and was modelling a cartoon cat at university. I had a few issues when saving the file across a network that was being worked on. To get out of this issue I had to import the model into a new file. I've since done this several times and noticed lots of random stuff appearing in Outliner (Image). The prefixes to this 'stuff' seem to suggest that the stuff has come from previous save files (e.g. cat_7:cat_6:cat_2olysurface8). If I try to delete these it makes the mesh of my model go crazy. Is there a way I can sort of merge all these together to create 1 tidy mesh in outliner?

Thanks!

try deleting history, also depends on what you have in your scene that's important, like skinning, deformers, etc, you can also try exporting just the selected nodes, generally thats a sure fire way to leave behind unassociated junk. If it still has nodes you don't understand then consult the manual.
