Nonlinear Deformers

Hi,
Is there a method to connect a nonlinear deformer to an object after the deformer is created? I have a deformer set up as part of an animation setup (a snake). The client now wants to add something onto the snakes back (as if carrying something). The snake deforms based on a wave deformer. So now i want to add this object to the deformer.

I did not make the snake or rig it; i'm only animating it. I tired Point on Poly constraint and that just gives me an error message. I can get the object into the rig ok, its just when i add the deformer motion that the added object doesn't deform too.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
