Texturing V-Ray Fur grass

I recently discovered how easy it is to make nice looking grass with vrayFur. However, now I'm trying to figure out how to vary the color or opacity along the length of the fur.

Basically what I'm trying to do is this (scroll down to part 4).
Or this (2nd question at the bottom).

Of course, those are for max... Is there a w-coordinate somewhere in Maya?

Hi,
Did you try the VRayFurSampler node utility ?

Ok, the VRayFurSampler node looks promising, but how would I use it?

Got it! Plug the VRayFurSampler's "distance along strand" into the vCoord of a V Ramp. Nice and simple.
