no bump maps in maya 2013

so today i was trying to apply a bump map to a lambert using the grid texture and i got nothing. i tried rendering with mental ray and maya software and nothing.

i tried staring a new file, making a simple cube, applied the bump map to the default initial lamber and nothing. i tried different textures as bumps and nothing. i tried different default rendering settings. new lights, no lights. and nothing

anyway, i got home from work and i just tried applying the grid as bump and it works as expected. so what could possibly go wrong?

i didn't see any errors in the render log.

Make sure the "Alpha is luminance" option is checked on when you connect a file node to the bump node manually.

yeah, there must be something wrong...

Im not sure whats going on there but I had also troubles with bump maps in maya 2013.

Namely using mray, several times after I ve made some changes to my bump map (rotate img, change bump value) it started to do weird errors - randomized splotches of noise and areas without bumps at all.

What worked for me was to delete the bump2d node and reconnect file texture again (new bump node will be created) then it started to work normally.

ok, so i got it to work

so if i attach a texture by using the checker icon next to the bump attribute it doesn't work. if i disconnect it then connect it again by dragging from the hyper shade, then it works.

when i use the check icon to create a bump with texture, it creates a stencil utility between the bump map and the shader. is this normal?

but also when i start a new document i get an error that this "swatchShadingGroup" cannot be found?

EDIT: so the maya documentation says this

"Note
When bump mapping Stencil textures, you must make manual, explicit connections. Bump map the texture, then manually connect the bumpValue to the stencil outAlpha."

so i guess that solves my issue - but god dammit did that cost me a lot of time at work yesterday.
