Flatten Mesh to 2D?

Hi,

I want to make an inflatable sculpture based on a 3D model. To do this right it seems that I must flatten or squash the mesh(es) into sections that can be (in this case) printed to vinyl and then cut out and sewn together.

Is there any way to do this in Cinema? UV projections have too much distortion and set point value collapses the mesh in a way that is also not useful for my purpose. What I am doing seems more like a task for Rhino, however since I don't know how to use Rhino, and am familiar with C4D I'm hoping there is some technique or plugin around that I am not aware of.

You might get pretty close using UVW if you cut the mesh up into enough sections and used the Relax UV function. Other than that ... nothing that I know of.

There are dedicated papercraft tools for this task. I have no link handy, but try searching the web and you'll find many options

Adam, Yes, cutting up the mesh and running relax UV on flat projections sort of works, but it is a complicated procedure, and problematic.

Manuel, thanks for the papercraft suggestion. I hadn't thought of that. I've downloaded a program called "Ultimate Papercraft" that might be helpful.

Pepakura Designer is the de facto standard for creating papercraft models, worth checking.

Thanks for the suggestion, Matthias. I checked that program also, however I decided that learning new programs is more trouble than figuring out how to do this in C4D.

I ended up taking Adam's advice and splitting the mesh up into many relatively flat sections via split command.

I'm about to start mapping all the UVs. What concerns me is keeping the proportions of all the meshes uniform. I'm going to use a UV grid as a base texture. Additionally, in the modeling window, I think I'll set up a camera grouped with a plane that has the same UV grid on it. This way, during interactive UV mapping, I hope to keep a close correspondence between the model's proportions and the UV proportion.

I don't know if it will work or not, but if anyone has a suggestion for the best camera projection type for this purpose I'd be happy to hear it.

PS: I attached a render of the model in question, "Banana with a Gas Mask". If all goes well then this will be a 5 m long inflatable sculpture that I'll parade through the streets of NYC as a promotion for my art exhibit there.

Maybe the plugin 'UV to Object' by Michael Welter is of some use.
