String of Pearls - (n)Dynamics Tutorial
after extensive google searching with no luck i have come to ask if there is any "string of pearls" type tutorials for maya either useing dynamics, ndynamics, hair, etc.?
I'm trying to make a photorealistic realworld string of peals that act naturally.
Or anybody want to take a shot at makeing one?

There are a lot of different ways of doing this, but one of the most flexible is to create a simple quad poly strip for the chain then make it nCloth. Now create the pearls along the chain with any geometry... select the pearls followed by the chain( the output cloth mesh ) and type parentToSurface. This positions the pearls on the chain based on nearest point to the mesh.
To make the collisions right you can use vertex collisions on the chain and set the thickness to the pearl size. As well on the cloth make the stretch resistance high but the compression resistance very low.
I've attached a scene showing this general technique. I made it as follows:
1. create poly cylinder with 30 subdivisions on the axis, 0 subdiv on cap and height = 0.2
2. Select the two cap faces and delete them(hit delete key)
3. Select cylinder and make nCloth.
4. create a sphere, then select its cvs and translate to position over one of the cylinder vertices. (moving the cvs keeps the rotate pivot at the origin)
5. Duplicate special: type = Instance, num copies 29, rotate Y = 12
6. Select cvs on the sphere and scale till all the instances nearly touch
7. Select all spheres then the cloth cylinder and do parentToSurface.
8. Make the collide and self collide methods = vertex on the nCloth. Set solverDisplay on cloth to collision thickness and scale the thickness until the collision spheres just overlap the pearls.
